I have been working at US Agency for International Development full-time (More than 8 years)
Smart, nice, highly educated people who are incredibly hard-working and passionate about their jobs. A flat non-hierarchical structure where you can carve out your own niche/have some say over what you work on. Opportunity to work on exciting projects with a lot of international level and having the satisfaction of improving people's lives.
Extremely fast-paced environment (too much so most of the time). Most direct-hires are overloaded with work and it tends to be relentless and occasionally thankless. Frequent intl. travel makes work/life balance difficult. Managers are typically more technically focused and often have trouble managing people. There is also a lot of bureaucracy, inefficiency and disorganization, particularly in certain units (HR functions/OAA).
Advice to Management
Promote leaders that are dedicated to managing people and improving work environments rather than only promoting the most technical people. Improve efficiency and responsiveness of HR (HCTM) and OAA.
