I have been working at US Army full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Job satisfaction is the greatest benefit of serving in the Army. Knowing that you are contributing to "defending the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, both foreign and domestic" provides a significant sense of purpose. The benefits are also greatly improved from the early '90s. Travel, and the opportunity to see and do many things that most will never see or do is also a great benefit. Finally, the development of leadership skills under the most demanding conditions is a definite plus.

    Cons

Sacrifice goes along with service. "We are not here to practice democracy, but to defend it" is more than just a funny line from a movie. Hardships of frequent moves and long, frequent deployments can take their toll on family. Lastly, knowing that some of the missions that you may be called upon to do have a significant political component, that you might not necessarily agree with can be difficult, but it comes with the territory.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Beleive that we ought to be pressing civilian leadership to get more "buy in" from the American people on the wars that we fight. We lost many good men and women in Iraq, and to see it all thrown away for political expediency is heartbreaking. Finally, stop with the social experimentation in the Army - we are here to prevent war, and if that fails, to fight and win those wars, not to further some progressive social agenda.
