I have been working at US Census Bureau full-time

This is a great place to work if you are a motivated, self-starter. If you like data and statistics, you have a wide array of options and upward mobility is readily available after you've served the required time-in-grade. It really doesn't take much to make yourself stand out from the crowd here.

If you are NOT self-motivated, it's very easy to become a "cog in the wheel" here. Census is also very "siloed", meaning that you have to work and seek out new opportunities, lest you will find yourself in the same job for your entire career. Lots of introverts, but that could be a good thing if you have even a moderately extraverted personality (goes a long way to making yourself noticed).

    Advice to Management

Communication is key with your employees. It can be very easy for direct report staff to get discouraged about a career at census if they don't know about all of the mobility options available to them. Retention tends to be an issue at census and I firmly believe communicating all that Census has to offer will help retention improve.
