I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The office environment was (usually) fairly relaxed. The pay was decent. The location in downtown DC (VACO) was easy to get to and an enjoyable setting. Overall, not a terrible job.

    Cons

The management is terrible. Worse than terrible. I watched months of work flushed down the drain because someone higher up decide to go in a new direction. I watched entire offices doing work they knew was pointless/counter-productive. I watched highly-paid consultants patiently try to explain why this or that plan was literally impossible only to be completely ignored. While generally the workload was bearable, occasionally someone high up would start screaming they needed something yesterday (despite emails clearly indicating it wasn't due for weeks) and then everyone would tailspin.

It got incredibly depressing if you actually care about service to the Vets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's really no advice to give. The problems are so pervasive to fix it you'd need to remove everyone with any power and start from the ground up. Management IS the problem. Hopeless.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
