I worked at US Green Building Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Too many to list. Highlight reel: CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Day-to-day work here is engaging, meaningful and fast-paced. My supervisor, team and senior leadership were incredibly supportive of individual career goals and advocated for my growth. If you work hard and make your ambitions known, you will have the opportunity to: pitch and spearhead new projects/innovations, travel domestically and internationally, dramatically expand your professional network, find senior-level mentors, engage in speaking opportunities, etc. This is a place where you can accomplish career-transforming projects and grow your career in responsibility, title and salary. It is up to you. USGBC gives you everything you need (and more) to succeed. BENEFITS Mind. Blowing. Benefits. I challenge you to find an employer that has medical/dental coverage on par with USGBC. They also offer 401K matching at 5 percent, tuition support, competitive salaries (in my experience), a professional development budget to travel and attend industry conferences, etc. Frequent book talks and speakers will keep you engaged (we had Sharon Salzberg in the house!). You will also use the free Starbucks machines/beautiful spread of organic tea everyday, if you know what’s good for you. And you benefit from being in a gorgeous, light-filled, modern and sleek LEED Platinum office space. You will *want* to come to work and sit in your space everyday. Oh, and there’s a free gym in the basement, plus every amenity possible for the bike commuters - covered racks, showers, etc. CULTURE Genuinely gifted, highly intelligent, like-minded and passionate people in every department of the organization. USGBC alum have come from and gone on to companies like Google, Tesla and a host of Fortune 500 companies. C-level leaders are exceptionally talented...there's a lot to learn here. Flexibility and trust to work at home and travel as needed, as long as you’re producing good work (this is one of the BEST parts of working at USGBC). Relatively casual dress around the office is totally acceptable. Staff is very close - plenty of happy hours, concert outings, workout/running groups and group sports (RIP Mean Green kickball team!). This is a very caring group of people: the support you'll receive during illness/tragedy/emergencies is moving. I have experienced this first hand (multiple times). In general, USGBC is a paradigm example of a modern office culture that places trust in its employees, and in turn has a loyal staff base that produces top-notch work.

    Cons

Volume of work can be high during crunch times, and many teams communicate outside of work hours (nights, weekends, etc.). But...if these are cons for you, you probably shouldn't be at any DC org. I found this level of communication and hard work really fulfilling. Plus, USGBC work is addicting. People love what they do here, so working a lot isn't a burden. Work-life balance is great at USGBC - you should be prepared to work hard, but you'll be out of the office on time most days.

    Advice to Management

Continue driving the modern, innovative culture that you have created! And generate more visibility on USGBC's culture and benefits. People need to know how great it is to work here.
