I have been working at US Navy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Often exciting work for which you feel like you are making a genuine contribution to global security. The career has constantly pushed me to tackle new responsibilities and learn new things. Educational benefits have been key, starting with the NROTC scholarship that paid for my undergraduate degree, followed by flight school, and eventually a two-year resident masters program at the Naval Postgraduate School. Significant travel opportunities are also rewarding.

    Cons

It does require a significant sacrifice in your personal life, especially once you start a family. The frequent moves (we have moved on average every other year for the past decade) can be a love/hate sort of thing. I'm grateful for the experiences I have been able to share with my family, living in many different parts of the country, and our family always tries to find the good parts about "the next place." That aspect depends largely on how well your family stays optimistic about the experience. But there's no changing the fact that the family separations and frequent moves are a challenge.
