    I worked at UTI full-time for more than 3 years


    everything starts out great - the people you work with are nice, friendly and hard working - upper management SAYS they want to hear input from the employees - SAYS they want to be on the list of best places to work - SAYS the benefits are top notch - SAYS the president and upper management know what they are doing. if you LOVE office politics, don't mind a regimented 'pecking order' where those one level above can (and do) abuse those on the rung below them; and can quickly figure out who the 'untouchables' are and become their friend, you will have a LONG run with this company - if not, then not. this company values the words 'yes boss' - 'you are SO right' - and 'i love it here, i'd rather be here than home eating cheesecake' far more than honesty and truthfulness.


    about 8 months after you start you see the first 'rif' (reduction in force) and you say, bummer! in another year there is another rif, and some of the friends you've made are in it. before each rif they have you do one of the 'how are we doing' questionnaires that are anonymous (sure they are) so you can tell upper management how you love your job. this cycle continues until you are a couple months from having your 401k vest and then - yep, you guessed it - YOU are in a rif. i was middle management and in that position there is a lot of pressure - upper management has no concept of what the 'worker bees' do and the 'worker bees' NEED direction - unless you have or get an MBA or higher degree you can NOT get promoted - ironic since Ms McWaters only has a bachelors! office culture is similar to the armed forces - don't question orders - do exactly what you are told - and when it backfires, accept the criticism and blame. the leadership reminds me of a ship - one without a rudder, steering wheel or anyone in charge - and no way to shut down the engines. don't take my word for this - look at the stock price since they went public - it accurately reflects their 'shoot in the dark' leadership style

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    find some way for everyone above director level to spend a week as an 'undercover boss' - LEARN from the experience - get off your golden thrones for a week and work in the trenches - where you have to come to work before 10 am and don't get to be late for and then sleep through meetings all day. stop telling your employees to BE happy and do SOMETHING to help them be happy - and no, i'm not talking about a once or twice a year 3 hour 'lunch' paid for by the company. come down from your perches high above the lowly throngs of employees you walk over every day and learn some of their names - maybe you'll be less likely to 'rif' them if you actually recognize them when they are not grovelling at your feet.
