Great company to work for, bad company to be a "contractor" for.

I have been working at Unilever as a contractor

    Pros

Employees were treated very well. Often they had food brought in on the company, many workshops about health and wellness, company get-togethers and events. They were well paid, had good vacation time, and they were treated like human beings. Unilever employees had it good.

    Cons

When I was there, they had tried to pass me off as a "Contractor" while actually treating me like an employee. The state of Connecticut has very specific rules about what constitutes each type of worker, so make sure that you check into this if you are going to become an "Independent Contractor" for Unilever.

It's not bad insofar as you get paid well, but you are ineligible for a lot of the benefits that Unilever employees get, including unemployment - which is the biggest problem if they decide to terminate you at any point.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Well, for one I'd be careful classifying people as independent contractors and treating them like employees, but beyond that... My situation was a bit unique. I didn't have any room for growth as I was the sole member of the department I hailed from. I didn't have a lot of oversight because no one really understood what I did. It seems like management throughout the rest of the company spends a lot more time checking in on everyone.
