I worked at United States House of Representatives full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The amazing part about working in a district office is that you connect policy and resources to community leaders in real time. You build a reputation based on the ideas and research you conduct to execute all types of projects from policy papers to events. You also meet amazing professionals and leaders in a myriad of industries.

    Cons

Unfortunately there's very little opportunity for upward mobility within an office because if you work for a popular member then people stay in the same position for years. If you work for a demanding member then there might be too much turnover. Also, the long hours and weekend work can get to people. This is not a job/career for the person who wants to spend a lot of quality time at home. I enjoyed the pace because of the impact it had on the community. You'll have to think about the future of your career and make sure you keep your options open.
