I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (less than an year)

NP receive a lot of autonomy, thus you learn a lot though are put in a lot of ethical situations because of the Optum model. Competitive salary, new NP start around $110,000

As an insurance company managing patients in a nursing home the goal is maximum profit thus it's a severe conflict of interest. In order to admit a patient to the hospital you have to travel through multiple venues of bureaucracy that attempt to stare you away from the admission to increase profitability. Optum's selling point is that it can treat most things in place and the patient will receive the same care as if they were in the hospital. However, this is not the case as some test are not completed and again patients are not admitted to save money. I couldn't work for this company any longer as I felt like I was working on a death panel. DNR's and DNH are pushed and once those are obtained patients have even less testing completed. NP are put in a lot of liability issues because of the pressure from management to treat in place and to increase profit. I couldn't stand the monthly meetings that focused on ways to increase profit and couldn't stand hearing of expensive testing was or advised to not use certain antibiotics because of cost. Also, the work life balance is awful, the worst I've seen in healthcare. Management is very unsupportive. NP's start with 23 days of PTO which includes vacation, personal time and sick time which some of the worst I've seen in healthcare.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that healthcare is about caring and about the patients and their families not maximum profit.
