I have been working at University of Alaska Southeast full-time (more than 10 years)

UAS is essentially a state job so there is a strong sense of security in the position, and we are not particularly over burdened with work. The access to activities as a younger employee is unparalleled as the student population keeps you feeling young and opens opportunities to join in things like whalewatches, comedians and musical performers. After 10 years the annual leave is boosted dramatically, so that's a plus.

As with any bureaucracy, there are a lot of decisions that were either made before your time which cement's the choice in perpetuity. In some departments, the option to move anywhere internally doesn't exist, so once you're in a job, there is no intentional advancement. And 'communication challenges' is frequently cited by staff, but persists in being a tough topic to 'fix'.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the information coming. The current provost has a newsletter which is a great model for sharing changes around campus. It would be great to see other managers modeling this as well for their particular scope.
