I worked at University of Arkansas full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The U. of A. is a very fast growing institution, that has more than doubled it's minority population in the last 13 years. It is located in one of the areas that has repeatedly been reported as being one of the more favorable areas to live in the country (jobs, educational opportunities, earning power cost of living etc.). Geographically the area has more available jobs then most places in the country. Economically there appears to be an availability of jobs, most low paying but employment is available. The issue is that there does not appear to be very much concern associated with equal opportunity in the area, or the University. This issue applies to gender, ethic groups, age, etc. etc. etc.

    Cons

In the pass 20 years there has never been more than two minorities in any decision making positions in the Finance Department, the Personnel Department, The Police Department, The Administrative Services Department, etc.. etc. etc.. The minority population (students) has increased but combined it does not equal 10% of the total population ( if you do not count "females" as an individual group).

This attitude of exclusion is very apparent in the faculty structure of the institution. The is a Dean of the Library and Journalism (I think) and recently the Business college. The present Chancellor has been integrating as fast as the institution will allow him to make changes, but that has been one person every few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are competent staff/ faculty presently at the institution, why not step forward and provide them with an opportunity to show what they can do constructively. There is a reason why the university can not keep staff and faculty of "color" and it centers around the lack of up-ward mobility. In the past 20 years the town next to Fayetteville has become predominately Latino and Hispanic. The private industry sector has increased its employment of all minority categories so the population in general has become highly diverse. However, the university I do believe has lost ground perhaps, but for sure has not improved its statistics over the past two decades.

    Neutral Outlook
