I worked at University of Edinburgh full-time (more than 8 years)

The pay was great - well above sector averages. Decent holiday allocation and benefits too. You will work with lots of interesting and intelligent colleagues. It's also great to work for such a respected institution. Most people enjoy a decent work-life balance. There are some amazing researchers working there who are truly inspiring.

The place is riddled with politics which can get in the way of work getting done. Because it is so large a real silo culture has emerged which means there is a lot of duplication and poor communication. Some jobs and departments can seem quite pointless. It is very difficult to change amything so if you are motivated and creative you will not find this a stimulating environment.
