Former Employee - IT Team Leader in Edinburgh, Scotland (UK)

I worked at University of Edinburgh full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good flexibility on working hours, not too much pressure.

    Cons

For non-academics, in-post promotion is impossible. Advancement is by applying for and getting senior posts. The problem is that these senior posts often go to staff in the immediate team. I.e. Getting ahead depends more on luck than aptitude and this is obvious in the quality of much of the management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow good staff to advance without waiting for dead man's shoes. Weed out cronyism.
