A lot of great colleagues, but salaries need major realignment and some longtime administrators need to move on

    Pros

    Great people to work with
    Good environment
The University is rapidly expanding and moving forward

    Cons

Some longtime administrators are holding back progress and can't trust up-and-coming leaders to make decisions.
Some salaries are way out of alignment with market values. The leadership of many departments know this and have come up with creative ways to give higher salaries through some wacky justifications. The state really needs to let URI take control of their own personnel and adjust salaries in place without having to jump through hoops in order to recruit and retain bright people. I hear they are making progress on this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to push for independence in making personnel decisions without state interference and realign salaries with market values. You cannot expect to recruit and retain quality faculty/staff when, for example, some staff positions require a master's degree and pay less than $40,000. What do you think you will get?

Also, some of the long-serving administrators need to go. They may have done a great job in the past but now you really need fresh thinking, new ideas, and innovation that they are holding up.
