I have been working at University of St. Thomas · Minnesota full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Your co-workers and students make it a wonderful place to work. In the last 5 years the student demographics have changed and continue to change for the better. The student body is more diverse with regard to race, sex-orientation, creed, color and socio-economic background. There are many "perks" of being a St. Thomas employee, however there are many, many more when you are a person in leadership or management. Which feels unfair, however it could be a lot worse compared to other organizations. There is also a respect and prestige which comes of working for the University of St. Thomas. I feel strongly at this time there are many changes to take place that will bring this institution up-to-date.

    Cons

There are many "perks" of being a St. Thomas employee, however there are many, many more when you are a person in leadership or management. This creates an environment of privilege for the leaders and the managers, however it creates division and mistrust among staff, especially with the hourly employees. While the money to be made would be considered great by some, a comparison of rates-of-pay among staff within St. Thomas of those with jobs with comparable requirements, show very little equality and makes very little sense. You can have an with Administrative Assistant making $28.00 per hour and a program manager making $19.00 an hour with a bachelor's and a master's degree. That makes no sense. Women are also paid less than men and people of color are paid less than people that are white.

While St. Thomas is changing, and change takes time (respectfully and rightfully so) most of that change has come in the last two to three years. St. Thomas, while having a prestigious reputation externally (in the public eye), internally St. Thomas is very old world. This institution used to be an all male, all white college and many if not most of those students, professors and administrators were well-off. They came from a background of privilege and had little to no interaction with people from diverse backgrounds. Now, due to this old-fashioned mindset, St. Thomas has difficulty in its ability to compete with schools that offer alternate methods of course delivery, that provide more opportunities for intercultural interaction among peers and teachers and diversity in learning. Then to top it off, its extremely expensive to not offer more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Compensation should be more equitable.
