I have been working at VMware as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great work-life balance. No Micromanagement. A lot of opportunities to move up early in your career. Great team camaraderie and always have great food and sodas stocked!

    Cons

Poor on-boarding process. sparse and unstructured training. No plans for professional development/growth while early in your career. Everyone is young and new to the company, which translates to poorly defined processes and procedures. Your learning and training is almost 100% self driven with little direction. There also seems to be a disconnect between what is promoted as the culture versus what really takes place between employees. Your performance does not matter; it's ONLY (seriously) about who you know and who knows you to get promoted.

    Advice to Management

Have structured training programs for sales and technology, as well as policy and procedures. Put more emphasis on results versus how well you know the hiring managers to move up (caveat: this has not affected me just an honest observation). Have better team meetings and closer collaboration. And to upper upper management: train your managers on how to effectively manage and develop people. Also, hire the best; do not just hire someone because it's their friends recommendation (there are a lot of people there that one asks themselves how they were hired). Evaluate people fairly and hire/promote them based upon their qualifications for the job.
