I worked at Varian full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The company gives you the freedom to be aggressive in your role and try new things. If you make mistakes you'll hear about it in no uncertain terms but if you were honestly trying to do something to improve the situation, they'll appreciate it even while chastising you for it. Not sure how it is now that they're part of Agilent because it's a very different culture over there.

    Cons

My brief time during the transition to Agilent suggested the culture was more "go along to get along" and people get ostracized for trying new things. The cultures were so very different - Agilent has lots of "processes" and hurdles to jump over to get things done whereas Varian was so de-centralized few processes existed and it was at times like the wild west, which wasn't necessarily a good thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As you wrap the company in all your processes, don't kill the creativity and freedom that made working there so enjoyable.
