Former Employee - Major Accounts Manager in Rockville, MD

I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Verizon Wireless is definitely the best overall wireless carrier out there, and they take care of their employees with great pay and benefits. Being in sales it was always easy to sell the service because almost every customer was aware that even though Verizon might be more expensive, the benefits of better coverage and overall technology make it worth the money. Very professional organization with great opportunity for promotion.

    Cons

Because it is such a big company, working at Verizon can seem like upper management only cares about hitting its numbers and any showing of caring for its employees is fake. Some upper management is under great pressure from above to excel and as a result there is a lot of negative reinforcement and pressure placed on sales managers and their sales teams that only ends up frustrating everyone. Also, monthly sales quotas are calculated using what is called a "Floating Quota". The better you do, the more your quota is raised. The pay is great, but raising your quota if you work hard and do well can make you just want to do average work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure the successful salespeople you are promoting know how to manage people in a positive motivating way, and make sure they all receive management skills training.
