Good medical care, but poor working environment.

Current Employee - Staff RN in Arlington, VA
Current Employee - Staff RN in Arlington, VA

I have been working at Virginia Hospital Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Efficient hospital - Would want family member to be taken there
-Good benefits (health insurance, etc) except for salary
-Short wait time in the ER
-Clean hospital, Single patient rooms so patients happy
-Good physician/RN relationships - friendly physicians

    Cons

-Unrealistic workload - too high patient load for RNs, no or not enough patient care techs scheduled most shifts.
-VERY High turnover rate for important hospital staff - loss of many good RNs, loss of majority of interventional radiology physicians recently, more than 5 hospitalists have left in past 6 months, loss of PICC RN, the list goes on and on.
-Lots of politics in hospital - management rules by intimidation and fear, not very approachable.
-Paper chart for progress notes - hard to read physician handwriting
-Lots of computer/IT problems - outdated system
    -No MRI availability at night
-Although hospital is technically non profit, management concerned highly with reimbursement. Ie - if it means hospital will be reimbursed less for hospital stay, management will tell you it can't be done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Place higher emphasis on improving employee morale and retention
-Become more approachable to day to day medical staff. Management only speaks with veteran physicians in hospitals and lose "good old boy network"
-Focus less on dollar and more on what's better for patient care

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
