    I have been working at Vistage International as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    The work the chairs do with their CEO members is very effective and very satisfying. The speaker resources are excellent. The support the chairs receive from their dedicated HQ support person is excellent.

    Cons

    This company has recently been purchased by a private equity company and the new CEO is from a completely different business culture. His mission is to grow the revenues of the company and then to resell it for a profit in a few years. I'm sure he must have been successful at doing this before.

    In the first two years of his tenure, the CEO Leon Shapiro has alienated most of the senior leadership and nearly all of the senior group chairs who are the backbone of the organization. He has been sued by at least one departing employee who had been respected by nearly everyone. Sexual harassment was one of the several charges against him.

    Because Vistage is a CEO organization, all of the CEOs of Vistage before Mr. Shapiro had been a member of a group and had understood the vital relationship between the paying members and the group chairs who facilitate the groups and provide most of the benefits of membership. Mr. Shapiro has repeatedly said he would join a group but has avoided doing so.

    The pay for chairs is scaled to favor large groups (14 to 18 members) and I believe the value of membership begins to decrease when groups become larger than 14.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I truly believe that Vistage would be far better off if the board of directors replaced the CEO.
