    I worked at W.W. Grainger full-time

    Pros

Having Grainger on your resume is a huge plus if you can communicate how the skills and experiences you learned from this job would be transferable to the future job. Good job for college graduates. Developed life long relationships with the few people that stick around long enough to get to know them

    Cons

Training is now 12 weeks long and a fraction of that time is relative to the TSA department. They lock you into a "base camp" and you can not be considered for advancement until you prove you have mastered the role. The expectation is 50 dials and 180 mins and that is all they care about. You are at the mercy of the CSG or territory you are assigned. Some have great accounts some have horrible ones and there isn't a lot you can do about it. You win on price and you lose on price most of the time and management wants you to convey the "value" of Grainger when the customer only cares about the bottom line. Compensation is very, very poor. Management can tap into your phone call at any given time which generates a micromanagement style in the office and they have pointless meetings at 1:00 every day. All in all if you can put up with the commute and somehow manage to live off the compensation- I would recommend sticking it out for a year and start looking for another job in your 10th month.

    Advice to Management

Restructure compensation if you want to reduce turnover. Use the TSA department as a farm system for TSR's. Have members from headquarters down the street stop by periodically to give some hope to employees that someday they might be able to get out of the TSA role. In my new role I get compensated appropriately which makes me feel like I owe the company my best effort. I never felt that as a TSA at Grainger.
