Former Employee - Assistant Manager in San Diego, CA

I worked at Walgreens full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It's a good company to work for while attending college. It has a decent starting pay, and an excellent 401k plan.

    Cons

The assistant manager program in my opinion is a joke. They teach you how to manage the store, but don't develop any leadership skills (Yes, there is a huge difference). It was my experience that the store/district managers where very close minded to feedback from the assistant managers. I had an old school store manager who used to love saying, that it wasn't a democracy, but a dictatorship. They don't really utilize the whole Assistant Manager Trainee program very well. I truly believe that some of my Team Leaders are vastly better developed as leaders than many Walgreen's Store Managers and would do circles around them. I am not saying it as disgruntle ex employee, I loved my time at Walgreen's. It's simply my honest opinion of my training at Walgreen's compared to my training at a much larger retail chain store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold store managers accountable for the development of their team. Listen to feedback, there are a lot of college students with excellent ideas. Once a year, sit down with every store assistant managers, and get feedback about the store manager; don't just rely on metrics.
