I have been working at Walmart part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    Employee discount program.

The work atmosphere is fairly laid back in comparison to other jobs.

During most days, you stay pretty busy and the time goes by fast.

Management was willing to make changes to your schedule according to your needs. They also did not mind if you cut your meals short to gain extra hours, so long as you did not go over your time. Overtime was offered during weeks leading up to inventory.

    Cons

The pay is pretty low for all non-management positions and there were not many advancement opportunities available.

The management team was never involved with the "lower level" associates. If you asked for help, you were often greeted with rude remarks and bad attitudes.

I almost never understood what was expected of me during the work day. I normally only received instruction or notes from management during high volume days and the weeks leading up to inventory.

The departments were almost always significantly understaffed. A lot of associates were expected to take on multiple different areas of the store rather than management scheduling an adequate number of people to work in each. This always led to very frustrated customers and I often times had to run out of my department and across the whole store to check prices and see if an item was in stock.
I also never understood why associates were not required to wear a walkie when they were the only one available in their department. Most departments paid no attention to the phone and on numerous occasions when I walkied to let someone know they had a call holding or to ask a question specific to their department, I was met with at least one infuriated supervisor or manager saying, " So and so doesn't have a walkie!" I never understood the aggressiveness, because the guideline was to not use the overhead pager unless you had to.; the walkie was always the first step you took. I also never understood why management expected associates to know who had a walkie and who did not.

The managers were push overs and never wanted to take disciplinary action against anyone reported. My store had a very big problem with repeat offenders, because management never wanted to take reports seriously. Even when coming from a supervisor, management usually would not even attempt a verbal discussion with the person in question.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to be more dedicated to making Walmat great for employees, not just customers.

Drop the superiority complexes and attitudes toward the lower associates.

    Support unity and teamwork.
