    I worked at Walt Disney Imagineering full-time

    Pros

    - Great product you can be proud to tell your friends and family about
    - Immensely creative and talented people (mostly)
    - Great combination of hard work and fun work
    - Friendly office culture with many formal and informal team celebrations
    - Great work life balance if you are proactive at managing your project load (with the occasional all hands on deck deadline)
    - Decent pay for a job most would do for free
    - Great resume builder and ability to build unique skills
    - Clear goals and values initiated at the top with direct links to the work at every level

    Cons

    - The allure of the job means most people never leave, advancement opportunities are limited and favor tenure over merit. It can feel a bit like waiting in line at Disneyland... but for years not hours
    - Talk about developing/retaining talent trumped with many outside hires at mid/high level positions reducing further advancement opportunities from within
    - Slow moving decision making and processes can suck the life out of a project/team/individual
    - Weak on performance management, very little actionable development feedback given. Slow to pull trigger on letting under performing employees go
    - Weak in long term resource planning and endured waves of head count reductions every couple years only to staff up again

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The slow transition away from the old way of working to a more nimble and dynamically scaleable workforce is painful, both for existing employees who question the stability of their job, and the new staff who are not sure how they fit into the organization and processes. Take risks and make step changes with well reasoned hypotheses, rather than incremental changes which feels like a slow pull on a band-aid. Do not assume that the existing middle managers and leadership are suited to lead this transition.
