    I have been working at WaterOne full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Conservative leadership means no layoffs and even firings only happen after lengthy attempts to reconcile. Generally it is a low stress employer with regular hours and the staff tend to be friendly and content in their positions. Benefits are within the median range, as is pay. The offices are very nice.

    Cons

    It is very difficult to move laterally and almost impossible to move upward. Different departments prefer to hire outside rather than take a chance on someone who isn't directly in their silo. Promotions usually only happen when people retire because the utility is very slow growth with few new positions. MANY employees retire after 30+ years of service...which is both great, and difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Look for more opportunities to cross train staff prior to job openings so you can move very qualified employees within the company. Otherwise, you will continue to lose tacit data and tens of thousands in training as ambitious and motivated staff must go elsewhere if they want to improve their salary, title, or responsibilities.
