I have been working at Western Connecticut Health Network

    Pros

Teaching hospital, opportunity to work with residents and med students, academic appointment with U. Vermont, closed ICU (no ICU coverage or procedures performed), very well equipped hospital with most essential specialties available. Compensation is fair and benefits are standard.

    Cons

High census and number of patient encounters per day. Could use more staff physicians, PAs and APRNs. Constant change in patient assignments compromising continuity of care throughout patient stay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps short staffing is not the way to go. Overworked personnel may be contributing to higher number of readmissions, length of stay, cost delivering care. Emphasize employee satisfaction. Consider quality improvement initiatives such as M&M meetings (involving house-staff as well) to optimize patient safety.
