    Challenging technical work, but schedules are crippling, morale is low, and management doesn't know what to do.

    I have been working at Westinghouse full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Best technology in the nuclear industry, many solid, rewarding technical relationships & colleagues. Nominal pay and benefits are good.

    Cons

    Work-life balance is horrible. Mandatory overtime, no merit raises this year, and some pay bands are not eligible for paid overtime, even though they are still required to work overtime. All to meet totally fictitious schedules for completing work. Morale is low and getting worse. All the pressure to meet schedule will be for nothing if the people with skills & experience needed to meet those schedules are gone.

    Policies and procedures are needlessly complicated, and crippling to efficiently getting work done. Desperately need to streamline and update procedures to reduce the burden.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Please, please establish real, honest project schedules and then challenge the employees to meet them. The current "real" schedules are a fiction, and only serve the purpose of playing chicken with the customer's lawyers for liquidated damages. The employees are getting crushed in the process. It will kill the company in the long term - loyalty, trust, care for the future of the company will be lost.

    Fix the company procedures - they are a huge drag on productivity across the board.

    Fix the innovation program for real - the current fix is a cruel joke. We need the ability to pursue ideas even if they don't yet have a proven business case. There are talented, creative people who are simply turned off by the current process.
