Former Employee - Sales and Business Development in Reading, England (UK)

I worked at Yell full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some truly great people. the work can be varied and challenging and they have some excellent products..

    Cons

Sadly the vast majority of the really great people have left although there are still a few good ones but unfortunately in my opinion not enough to make the difference that is needed, In my role i liaised/worked with many departments up to director level and i experienced a lot of apathy throughout, also the constant silo mentality can be draining...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move away from short-term efficiencies and performance goals as you’re only addressing the symptoms and not the root causes. Create a strong vision (a genuine one that actually means something to your employees), develop your strategy and execution around this and stick to it, then ensure this is clearly communicated (Not just the ‘What’ but the all-important ‘How’ as well) to all departments with particular focus on sales management. As your strategy develops please, please inform your staff and keep them informed (what and how) motivate them (threatening is not motivation) you will be amazed at what could be accomplished if you will just stop keeping them in the dark, lying, coercing and using some decidedly underhand tactics in a vain attempt to increase performance. Lastly but most definitely not least 'PUT YOUR CUSTOMER FIRST' I know you keep saying you do, there are even some brave individuals that manage it, but believe me as a company you really don’t you have a clue, bench mark yourselves against some of the best customer focused companies in the UK it will be very obvious – I've seen this before it’s the all-important creditors that driving a lot of the decisions... I wish you all the very best success..
