Current Employee - District Manager in Union City, CA

I have been working at Young's Market full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I am based out of Union City, CA. This is experience based on this regional office. Some great people to work with, which really depends on what office you work out of. However these are not the people that they promote willingly. The suppliers are the only ones with respect for what you do.

    Cons

I have never worked anywhere with such bad culture. When you go to you boss or their boss to ask for help and they tell you to figure it out, as an employee it is hard to stay motivated or learn. Training is non-existent after you start. Only the supplier will provide education, so the company itself isn't interested in development.

Most people are miserable and take it out on everyone they can find. The hours are not flexible, it will ruin your holidays since that is the busy time.

There have been issues with sexual harassment and the management turn over is relentless so there is no direction to the team. Even if there was a direction the communication is the worst I have ever experienced. Also, they assume every time someone is sick they are lying. I heard one division manager even say "she got pregnant to get out of work." That is the type of workplace Young's can be.

As a manager I had to work with certain people in HR who wouldn't help me fill out workers comp paperwork and basically ignore your calls. In every other place I have worked HR has been generally supportive. I have never worked at a place where your HR avoids and ignores their staff. It was weird.

The company also over looks candidates for management because they are not the right look and feel, even if they are the top performer in the division. It's overall a sad environment to get sucked into.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you stop the negative attitude and mistrust of your employees and figure out the direction and the communicate that with a strong business plan. It might be the way to turn around this office.
