    Pros

The company spends significant effort on 'culture' and it shows. Most people are highly collaborative and like-minded- driven to improve healthcare and/or make an impact. It is highly energetic and fast paced, for those that like that sort of thing. The cafeteria is filled with delicious food, you can have a standing desk if you ask for it, and there are a number of other 'amenities' that make you very comfortable working here. Days off is generous and there is a lot of flexible options. People bring their dogs to work. Maternity and paternity leave is very generous.

The nice thing is that most (but not all) people genuinely have the collective interest as priority, but there are some and increasingly more otherwise. The best thing absolutely are the people, and athena has a great brand name.

    Cons

While there are many superficial niceties, there are a lot of issues under the surface. Processes are confusing, people are stretched extremely thin, where certain groups work very late everyday and weekends. Career development and professional growth is difficult, as athena's HR has been broken for a very long time and management for the most part are either young, limited in experience outside of athena or both.

The organization is shockingly political for a company of its size. I have seen people throw their directs under the bus (read: fired) and even get praised for it, people who get promoted despite poor results and other shenanigans. If you work in certain departments, you simply execute with little or no say on what should actually be done.

    Advice to Management

Jonathan Bush is mostly inspirational and I believe he has the best of intentions. While the company has made strides in removing some poorer performers in its management ranks, there are still plenty especially in the Director/Executive Director and VP cohorts. These are the people that really influence the day to day and have tremendous impact on culture and execution.

If there is a single thing that could be done, it is providing serious people management training. There are many young managers, some with great potential, but require additional guidance. In addition, incentives need to be properly aligned to get people to pay attention to this.
