    I have been working at mindSHIFT full-time

    Pros

    The technical front-end of mindSHIFT (customer care, network operations and customer engineering) provides an excellent foundational bedrock of Microsoft (Windows, Server, Office) and network-related concepts/experience. You are immediately immersed in a sink-or-swim environment, with a 'learn-on-the-job' mentality.

      Potential applicants should be happy to know that the vast majority of those hired have little to no experience in IT; and is an excellent company to learn and refine existing skills. Those wishing to acquire certifications will receive plenty of hands-on examples that translate to A+, Net+ and an introduction to the skill set required for Microsoft's MSCA (and potentially MSCE) certifications.

    Cons

    mindSHIFT is a company with a high degree of potential, however is severely lacking in the core-management faculties that ensure success. The company offers opportunity to those with little to no experience, however this has proven to be a double-edged sword that mindSHIFT is slowly falling on. There are 'ideas' for workflow, however a lack of refinement many times prevents proper handling.

      Customers will often call into the center and be met by a relatively inexperienced engineer that has no clue how to solve the problem; and in many cases does not have the skill-set to identify the root issue. One would assume that since the company hires 'green' people, there would be an extensive and elaborate training program to straighten the learning curve; there is nothing. This results in case escalations that encumber senior-engineers that would normally work far more complex and impaction requests. This culture of 'standing on the shoulders of giants' and passing the buck has degenerated productivity and caused many senior engineers to become dissatisfied.

     Another 'area to improve' at mindSHIFT is the political infighting and lack of communication between departments. Management appears consistently at odds with one another, and communication has broken down as a result. Everyone has a different vision or idea for running the show, and it has become a 3-ring circus of disjointed ineptitude. Customers are becoming increasingly hostile as a result of this apparent breakdown, further handicapping the ability to affect change.

      A primary weakness of mindSHIFT is an inability to provide direction for tenured employees, and has resulted in high-turnover of the core knowledge-base of the company. Senior engineers with a firm grasp on the company products and processes, have left due to a failure to match compensation or provide career direction. There has been little to no negotiation with these individuals that have left, and their former supplicants are ironically given their positions; whom then look even higher up the chain for a resource to rely upon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    A sincere overhaul is needed that re-organizes the company in a manner that both attracts talent and nurtures the existing knowledge-base. There is the potential for mindSHIFT to run like a well-oiled efficient machine, however the operators are asleep at the wheel.
