My experience at rue21 was taxing, yet somewhat rewarding.

I have been working at rue21 part-time (more than 3 years)

I love my team, including my variety of different store managers.
Aside from a few dud assistant managers, the atmosphere working at rue21 was upbeat and positive.
Flexible scheduling since my sophomore year in high school until my second year in college.
Provides opportunity for in-store promotions. .

    Minimal training
    Minimal pay
District Mangers (DM) and Store Managers (SM) try to keep associate and assistant managers pay to a minimum.
Depending on the store, shipment can be your worst nightmare. (Higher volume stores have stock persons)
Associates do all dirty work in the store and managers get the praise for any good that comes out of a store.
Over all pay, tasks, and treatments from managers can come together to overtax and burnout associates.
Although a sales driver is necessary in any company, rue21 lives, eats, and breathes fragrance almost to the point where the company looks ridiculous.
One personal experience to demonstrate how obsessive they are about fragrance: the store missed the fragrance goal for the first time in weeks and the district manager came into the store and told the manager that any associate that is not performing or has slacked off, to call in Human Resources and partner to get that associate fired.
There are two things wrong with this: for one, associates have off weeks and times where they are not on top, nobody is always on top. Two, nobody ever had intentions of calling HR to fire an associate for not performing for one week. HR has too much to worry about. After working there so long as associate, I recognize tactics the company uses to "scare" their associates into shoving fragrance down customers' throats.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Number one piece of advice is to make your associates feel appreciated. Come up with a reward program for each week's top performing seller. Make them feel as if they are a part of the company and not just the manager's slaves. Although many associates are in school and part time, understand when associates are a little under performing. Give that associate a break from register and allow them to recover the store and their fire to want to do good. Once they are there for so long, they often feel used and overlooked from the company. Don't make them feel that way. Let them know their work is appreciated. That goes for Part-Time Assistant Managers to District Managers. To gain respect, you, as a manager, have to have the ability to step off of your high-horse and have respect for those under you.
