I worked at 1100 Architect as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful office space / generally nice staff / sophisticated design. One of the partners is quite nice if you get the opportunity to work with him.

    Cons

One of the partners has a rather frightening temper which unfortunately casts a tense, uneasy tone over the entire office. While working there, as much thought went into "how do I not get yelled at / humiliated" as "how do I make this project the best it can be", which is obviously problematic. While the design level of the office is very high, there is a lack of satisfaction in working there due to this feeling of walking on eggshells. The office also has a no-headphones policy that can make the more tedious workdays nearly unbearable. While there, I had wished the office culture was more friendly and supportive. Had this been the case, I probably would have been more committed to my assignments rather than counting down the hours until I could get out of that place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on the happiness of your employees -- its been proven time and time again that a satisfied workforce is a more productive workforce. Most of the people you employ are smart, driven, and highly capable, but the apprehensive environment can be a real motivational drain. Remember that your designers show up everyday to create great architecture and to help advance the mission of the firm -- don't treat them as adversaries or incompetents.

    Interview Details

I had an interview with two associates. They were some of the most cold and unfriendly people I have ever met, hence the interview process was a bit awkward at times. The people here take themselves very seriously.
