The single-most-important factor in getting employees to recognize the importance of ethics training is a manager who models the right behavior. If a manager consciously promotes ethics training as a priority, then it is more likely to resonate with his or her employees or project staff.

    Why ethics training?

Organizations often face a challenge motivating employees to take ethics training seriously. As the old adage goes, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." It's one thing to be recognized for developing an engaging, interactive training program, but it's another thing to attract the attention of busy employees and managers that already have a lot on their plates.

Jill Bruning, executive vice president and general manager, discusses unconscious bias and gender diversity.

#WomenExcel: Are you aware of your unconscious bias?

Early in my career as a mechanical engineer, I was counseled on how to speak and how to dress. As a woman, you adapted by downplaying your differences such as your appearance. So you did silly things like wear closed-toe shoes, style your hair in a bun, and only wear black or navy blue.

Diversity and Inclusion

At AECOM, diversity is embedded in our culture

“We respect and encourage our employees’ ideas, diversity and cultures.” The diversity of our staff brings new ideas and perspectives to the forefront which contributes to AECOM’s industry leadership. Incorporating the tenets of diversity and inclusion into every aspect of our business is central to driving innovation and expanding as well as enhancing the overall AECOM experience for our employees, clients and stakeholders. With employees in more than 140 countries worldwide, we recognize that our commitment to sustaining a diverse and inclusive environment is paramount to our continued success.

Our goal is to recruit, engage and develop outstanding people from a wide range of backgrounds and skills. This mosaic, in turn, makes AECOM an adaptable business partner that is understanding of, and responsive to, the needs of the clients and communities that we serve.

Diversity expresses itself in many different ways – age, gender, race, nationality, language, culture, marital status, sexual orientation, religion, belief or creed, education or disability, among others..  We strive to maximize the potential of our employees by harnessing these differences and creating a productive, inclusive environment in which everyone feels respected and valued, where their talents are fully utilized, and in which company goals are achieved.

AECOM promotes an environment free from discrimination and harassment and is committed to ensuring equal opportunities in all areas of employment, including recruitment, hiring, training, and promotion. AECOM strives to ensure all employment practices are objective and free from bias, are based upon work criteria and individual merit, and meet the broader goals and objectives of the enterprise.

In order to leverage diversity as a competitive advantage, it is AECOM’s policy to:

  • Ensure that everyone receives equal treatment in all aspects of employment policies and working practices.
  • Foster an open working environment free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Employ a workforce that reflects the diverse communities in which we operate.
  • Raise employee awareness by designing and delivering sustainable diversity initiatives.

Act as an employer of choice as well as influence our industry peers and business partners to adopt similar diversity standards and goals.

One way we encourage diversity is by encouraging women in leadership across the globe by highlighting women who excel. Read more on our blog here:

Our work directly impacts people’s lives. Whether we’re designing a mass transit system in New York City or helping to build a bridge in Hong Kong, the ultimate purpose is to enhance quality of life.

Because we’re thinkers, planners, and designers, we don’t just look at the short term. We recognize our responsibility to ensure that our designs take long-term social, economic and environmental impacts into account.

Fusing science, engineering, and design solutions, we work to incorporate sustainability into every project in order to shape a better tomorrow.

But it’s not just in our work for clients that we pursue sustainability. In virtually every AECOM office around the world, local initiatives are in place to encourage the conservation of energy, water and other finite resources.

Sustainability is integral to AECOM. It’s what we do, and it’s our commitment to the future.

Engineers Without Borders

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) helps create a more stable and prosperous world by addressing people's basic human needs — providing necessities such as clean water, power, sanitation and education.

Through the implementation of pro-bono engineering projects, EWB partners with underserved communities to implement sustainable engineering projects such as potable water systems, sanitation systems, dams, roads and bridges, and energy systems. They also provide community capacity-building activities such as training to empower local residents to maintain projects and engage them in the development of future projects benefiting their communities.

AECOM partners with EWB in helping to advance its mission. We offer several support options to our employees, including: a) membership promotion and participation throughout the organization; b) financial support to participating staff to cover personal travel expenses associated with EWB trips; c) support of EWB activities by providing access to company facilities and other resources; and d) access to a vast network of technical expertise.

I have been working at AECOM (More than 3 years)

Opportunities abound at AECOM, for those willing to assert themselves and stand out among the now 100,000 employees. This company has the depth and breadth to win and succeed with managing major marquis projects across the globe. Internal communications and networking tools keep employees connected with each other and our leadership teams. Leadership takes stake in the engagement and satisfaction of their employees, and are currently working diligently to address "improvement opportunities" identified in the 2015 Employee Survey, which received excellent participation.

It's been almost a year since the announcement of the URS acquisition, and as a legacy employee of a 2011 URS acquisition, I think the transition has gone comparatively well, considering the magnitude. That said, it's a tough time for management now, and stress on middle-managers to maintain project efficiency during an administratively burdensome period is high. It's a bottom-line world, but I think we can strike a better balance with Work/Life as well as employee compensation. Hoping we'll all be better for it once the growing pains run their course.
