Undergraduate Internships

Engineers Without Borders 


Engineers Without Borders (EWB) helps create a more stable and prosperous world by addressing people's basic human needs — providing necessities such as clean water, power, sanitation and education.

Through the implementation of pro-bono engineering projects, EWB partners with underserved communities to implement sustainable engineering projects such as potable water systems, sanitation systems, dams, roads and bridges, and energy systems. They also provide community capacity-building activities such as training to empower local residents to maintain projects and engage them in the development of future projects benefiting their communities.

AECOM partners with EWB in helping to advance its mission. We offer several support options to our employees, including: a) membership promotion and participation throughout the organization; b) financial support to participating staff to cover personal travel expenses associated with EWB trips; c) support of EWB activities by providing access to company facilities and other resources; and d) access to a vast network of technical expertise.

    Pros

    The opportunities, expertise, meaningful projects and large network that comes with being the global industry leader. Performance rating system. Bonuses directly tied to project performance. The company is going through change as it evolves into an unprecedented industry leader which is exciting (just understand it will take some time to work out the bugs).

    Cons

    Lack of attention to technical training. Performance rating system. IT support is inadequate, particularly in regards to software procurement/management. Technical/production employees are not able to focus on their main job duties due to too much bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in technical training and developing standards. Establish department level budgets so hiring managers can work with individuals to develop specific training plans. Performance rating system is a pro due to its ability to make a difference and push employees to stretch themselves. It is also a major con because of the forced distribution curve expectation of the ratings. Forced distribution of performance ratings is an outdated/failed concept. We lost several talented people as a result due to their objections.

    I was contacted by an AECOM recruiter asking to set-up a phone interview. She suggested a date and time. I replied that the time would work for me. I provided a phone number that I could be reached at. When the agreed upon time occurred, the recruiter never contacted me. I sent an email back asking if she would like reschedule. Crickets. If this is how AECOM treats its applicants, I shudder to think how they treat their employees.
