This policy is anchored in ARCADIS’ General Business Principles, which describe our responsibilities and commitments towards society, clients, employees and shareholders. Our employees are encouraged to share these commitments and to sign our integrity code. Equally important is the attitude of our people as reflected in our mission: passionately contributing to a balanced and sustainable development of the human habitat, in open dialogue with all stakeholders.

Our Corporate Social Responsibility Policy aims to give our stakeholders a clear understanding of our standards for business conduct. The policy applies to all ARCADIS employees, governs our approach to all our activities, and includes:

ARCADIS has taken notice of the G3 sustainability reporting guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative for the reporting of its sustainability information in the 2009 Annual Report. Levels of materiality have been considered in choosing the indicators relevant for ARCADIS. After a self-assessment we declare an application of the GRI principles on a C level.


Sustainability by Design Program
The concept of sustainability is built around the premise that corporations, governments and communities can improve their financial performance and longer term viability while responsibly addressing more global and social impacts.

Sustainable development is a core element of ARCADIS' business strategy - we recognize that every project is directly linked to the global environment. As such, we continually invest in state-of-the-art technologies, processes, products and services that enable us to best serve future markets and create a sustainable environment.

Our sustainable projects range in size from a small, photovoltaic (PV) reverse osmosis drinking water treatment facility in a remote national park to the largest industrial complex utilizing sustainable design in the world—the Ford Rouge Center in Dearborn, Mich. ARCADIS' integrated design and management consulting teams provide real, measurable, cost-effective solutions and peace of mind to both our public and private sector clients.

ARCADIS' sustainable design features address needs such as energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, environmentally friendly materials, resource conservation, lean manufacturing, recycling, treatment and other restorative process, worker and public safety, alternative transportation, socially responsible investing (SRI), and greenhouse gas (GHG) management.

Our staff has the expertise to provide sustainable solutions that suit current needs and your future goals while improving your triple bottom line—financial success, environmental protection and corporate social responsibility. With our integrated team of environment, infrastructure and facilities professionals, we are uniquely qualified to design sustainable solutions.

We use the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System for many of our designs and we have several LEED-accredited staff members. As a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and many other prominent professional organizations, we frequently participate in major conferences and seminars on sustainable development, assuring that our staff is informed on the most progressive sustainable design applications.

To that end, our global health and safety vision and policy reflect a proactive risk and behavior-based approach that integrates Health & Safety (H&S) into our culture, values and the way we do business.

Health & Safety management systemOur global H&S management system is designed to standardize the process of H&S across the company but allow for the nuances of local culture, client expectations and regulation.  Our system focuses on proactive hazard recognition, risk assessment and control to prevent accidents.  Lessons learned and best practices are regularly shared globally through our formal Safety Share process and informal networking of staff.  Our system empowers staff to conduct their work in such a way to protect themselves and others.  It gives them the tools to implement healthy and safe work practices at all times and encourages them to use these tools off-the-job to maintain a healthy and safe personal lifestyle.

 Strong Health & Safety performanceH&S is also an integral part of the solutions we provide to our clients, and a key differentiator.  Clients are regularly setting higher performance standards that stress continuous improvement, stewardship and employee engagement and accountability.  ARCADIS has met these challenges and is striving to exceed the expectations of our staff, clients and stakeholders. 

ARCADIS uses both leading and lagging indicators to measure its H&S performance including near miss reporting, H&S communications, training, H&S assessments, and employee satisfaction.  In addition, ARCADIS measures performance using the traditional work-related injury and illness rates per standard definition and measurement techniques that match those of most of the regulatory bodies which apply to our operations and those of our clients that frequently request this information. 

Since 2004, ARCADIS has reduced its rate of recordable injuries by 58%.  Lost time injuries have decreased 54% over that same period.  In addition, as a leading indicator, since 2006 when we began collecting Near Miss reports, we have had an increase of over 300%.  We address near misses in the same way we do an injury, with a thorough investigation and by sharing lessons learned.  We have also received numerous awards from clients for our H&S performance and several of our operating companies are certified to OHSAS 18001 and various other third-party audited standards.

Continuous ImprovementARCADIS continuously strives to improve its H&S program and performance.  We do this by:

  • Regular review of the H&S risks of each ARCADIS Operating Company (OpCo) to ensure that each risk is appropriate controlled throughout the company.
  • Further improvement of our employees’ capability to recognize hazards and near misses, reporting these effectively and investigating them effectively.
  • Frequent sharing of lessons learned related to best H&S practices and incidents.
  • Continual stewardship from our leaders to promote our H&S culture with our staff.
  • Working with our partners to complete our work in a healthy and safe environment for all of our stakeholders

    I have been working at ARCADIS US full-time (more than 3 years)


    ARCADIS as a company enables staff to engage in a large number of diverse projects. The company has developed a significant internal knowledge sharing network, which enables employees to continue to learn while on the job.


    The dynamic of the workplace differs significantly between locations. ARCADIS has grown significantly through acquisitions; therefore, there are still several barriers to break down between employees from different backgrounds (previous companies). A principal internal complaint with ARCADIS is that they management does not look out for the junior staff. The supervisors and mentors in my experience have taken significant interest in investing in the junior staff, but the management style and method of establishing performance metrics often negatively affects the younger staffers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The management has taken time to attempt engagement with the various offices, which I believe is on the right path. The bottom line is that ARCADIS pursues top talent, but does not compensate or reward them appropriately. Little incentive is given to top performers to stay with ARCADIS outside of the coworkers and the friendly environment. Increasing performance goals for each region/division often carries down to a heavier load on the junior staffers, which often translates to more hours for the key performers. Very low annual increases combined with significant increases in annual metrics are not in the best interest of the company.

    I went to a career fair at Penn State after I had already applied to the company website. I was contacted about 4 weeks later by a recruiter for a job opening that fit my resume.
