I worked at Applied Psychological Techniques full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

On the consulting side, everyone is very competent and you learn a great deal from your peers. I always felt the consulting side was a very collaborative environment, with consultants working together to always give the client the best solution possible. Clients are mostly Fortune 100/500 allowing for you to get great experience on large projects. Premium benefits package (for a small firm) and work-life flexibility are big perks. You have a great deal of autonomy and are allowed to manage your clients once you have a few years under your belt. Even though it is a client service driven culture, consultants are not expected to work 60 hours every week. A good variety of different types of HR projects - very few days are the same.

    Cons

Base pay may be a little lower than competitors but I think the benefits and other advantages to working there make up for it. It is a small to medium sized consulting firm so realistically there are very practical limits in the promotion/type of roles you can attain - you need to want to be in a client facing consulting role long-term on the consulting side. That said, because of the autonomy and ability to build your own projects you can really the shape the kind of work you do over time.
