I have been working at Arch Capital

    Pros

    Smart talent pool
CEO knows that people drive the success of the organization and he is good about making sure the company rewards those people
Willingness to walk away from business that seems unprofitable

    Cons

Lack of cohesion across disparate units
Beyond "write profitable business" no coherent mission or strategy to it all
Seems to be up to each entity to develop its talent, with no help from the parent (no HR initiatives for developing younger talent into tomorrow's leaders)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are no problems looming in the next five years, and maybe not even the next ten, but at some point, I think that ACGL could look totally different if there is not a fostering of younger talent who will have grown up in and respected the ACGL approach and keep it going down the road. If this continues and the company looks to hire talent from outside, the dynamic can change dramatically.

Instead the company offers property/casualty insurance and reinsurance through subsidiaries in Bermuda, Canada, Europe, and the US. Its insurance subsidiaries offer marine and aviation, professional liability, health care liability, and other specialty lines. The company's US subsidiary, Arch Insurance Group specializes in excess and surplus lines coverage. The company's Arch Re reinsurance subsidiaries focus on property/casualty coverage, including catastrophe and some... More
