    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Aspera (Emeryville, CA) in July 2015.

    Interview

First steps are a coding challenge and phone screen or two. Everyone gets the same coding challenge, so efficiency and elegance of the solution is paramount. The candidate has a couple days to complete it. The first phone screen is a chat with HR or a recruiter to gauge candidate's fit with the company culture and job openings. Then there's a phone screen with the head of engineering or a project lead to gauge technical skill. The next step is the onsite which consists of 4 or 5 interviews with the heads of various projects/departments. Each interviewer has their own strategy and agenda. Questions run the gamut from describing language-specific terms, concepts, and gotchas, to descriptions of foundational concepts, to white-boarding problems of varying difficulty. One interviewer asked me to look at some simple code written in a made-up programming language and talk about it what it might do, whether it works, etc. At the end of the onsite I met the VP of HR (who maintained regular contact throughout the hiring process). I had a follow-up phone interview with the CTO a few days later which included a short coding challenge, and then a final phone call with the CEO to discuss my background and how my expectations aligned with the goals/values of the company.
