Our Headquarters on Bainbridge Island, Washington is a modern, sprawling, 3-story building. And while most of us tend to take the stairs, the elevator ride is short. Which is why it’s good that our “elevator speech” is short as well.
“We provide the fastest, easiest, most accurate and affordable way to manage sales tax compliance.”
That’s our value proposition, and it’s all there in a nice little nutshell. But if it were a longer elevator ride – a really big high-rise, our story might be longer. We’d talk about how Avalara is a Software-as-a-Service, cloud-based, transaction-tax solution that integrates directly into existing workflow processes. We eliminate the tedious work and complexity of calculating, collecting, reporting on, and remitting taxes across multiple jurisdictions.
We offer integrations with more financial, e-commerce, point-of-sales and mobile applications than any other transactional-tax solution on the market.
Today our tax decision engine processes more than 1.7 million tax calculations every day. We file more than 500,000 tax returns every year for more than 25,000 licensed users throughout the U.S., Canada and abroad. And with the stunning growth we’ve been experiencing, you can know that as sure as you're reading this, those numbers are already outdated.
Jobs at Avalara
An idea so big, we make sales tax exciting.
We're the first to admit it - sales tax isn't sexy. But revolutionizing fundamental business processes -- that's big time. And that's what we're doing everyday, bringing technology to bear on the arcane process of sales tax calculation, reporting and remitting. When you think about it, that's a key step in every sales transaction, every day, everywhere. From development to finance, consulting to sales, marketing to customer service, we're working hard to shine the light on a better way.
From the beginning, we've said that "we make sales tax less taxing." And while there's definitely a start-up energy at Avalara, we have a lot of fun along the way. From summer barbecues to evening get-togethers in the Tiki Lounge, we take that whole "work hard, play hard" thing to heart.
If that sounds like an exciting challenge - and if you thrive in a hyper-growth environment- dig a little deeper to see if life as an Avalarian is for you. We've included some key information here on this page that will give you a feel for who we are and what we do. For more, check our resources page.

I have been working at Avalara full-time (more than 3 years)Pros
The best thing about Avalara, is the people. It doesn't matter which department I am interacting with everyone is warm and helpful. I love going to work and having friends there. The work is interesting and constantly changing.Cons
The office on the island feels a bit cramped. I wish I knew more about what was coming in the future. A few years ago this was no problem, but as we continue to grow, it feels like the other teams have become silos.Advice to ManagementAdvice

Getting an Interview
Getting an Interview
- Interview Details
The recruiter reached out and scheduled a meeting. She later cancelled two hours before we were scheduled to chat and suggested exactly one alternate time later the same day. I replied that time didn't work and never received a reply back. Only when I called her out for not replying and poorly representing the company did she reply back and request a reschedule. I'd never move forward with a company that exposes this type of person to senior prospects and I did not in this case.Interview Questions
