The Avery Dennison story begins in 1935, with just a few spare parts, one very bright idea and a $100 loan.
Ray Stanton (“Stan”) Avery, a struggling clerk in Los Angeles, invented a smarter way for stores to price their products, then went on to pioneer the labeling industry.
With a few simple materials—primarily used machine parts and a saber saw—Stan created and patented the first self-adhesive, die-cut labeling machine. His practical genius would ultimately yield eighteen patents and establish Avery Adhesives as the company that transformed how brands and businesses deliver information. In 1990, Avery International merged with Dennison Manufacturing to become Avery Dennison.
Today, we manufacture and distribute labeling and packaging materials in over 50 countries and employ more than 25,000 people. The flexibility and responsiveness afforded by our company's global footprint enables us to service our customers at key points throughout their supply chain.

I became interested in Avery Dennison because of the opportunity to develop my career beyond traditional areas of responsibility. In 2010, I made a cross-functional move from an operations role in Avery Dennison Label and Packing Materials business to a customer-facing position.
It was a bold move. I had to learn a completely different side of the business. But my experience in operations is a real advantage in my current customer-centric role. I’m better at mobilizing internal support to meet customer demands, and I have credibility when I talk with customers about our products and manufacturing capabilities. Customers familiar with my background will even ask me to walk through their shop floor and provide feedback.
My cross-functional move also inspired some of my colleagues to take their own careers in a new direction. At Avery Dennison, the most important thing is to have the mentality that you want to influence and create your own future — that you want to take your destiny into your own hands. This is not a company where you have to wait until somebody approaches you and takes you to the next level. It is an environment that really offers opportunity for those who are eager to learn, develop and go beyond the traditional career path.

I started a full-time internship at Avery Dennison just after technical high school. It was a great opportunity to see how the company operated and for the company to see how I could perform. In my responsibilities and workplace interactions, I wasn’t treated like an outsider, but rather, the same as any other employee. That meant a lot to me.
After I was hired, I continued and completed my university studies. After that, my career accelerated quickly. I earned Six Sigma Green Belt and Six Sigma black belt certifications, the last one in the U.S., and completed a short-term assignment in Leiden (the Netherlands).
My first regional role focused on creating synergy in product development. For this task, cross-functional support was very critical because product development involves nearly all of the departments in different stages. Even though Avery Dennison is a large corporation, there is a small company environment here in South America. We work really well together. We also have an excellent interaction with the technical teams from other regions and get great support from them.
Today, I see that employees have even more opportunities to develop. This goes beyond learning the technical parts of the job. If you want to advance your career, you have to learn to be a leader — to deal with people and processes.
As a director today, I absolutely encourage internships. It is valuable for students to learn from us, and it is valuable for Avery Dennison to bring fresh, new perspectives into the workplace. It’s very positive for both sides.

I applied online. The process took 7+ weeks. I interviewed at Avery Dennison in July 2015.
Applied June 17th...phone interview June 22nd (standard questions on what you know about the company and yourself)...phone interview with hiring manager July 14th (I was told I had excellent feedback). I went on to the in-person interview on July 27th. I knew something was amiss when I was told the hiring manager wasn't going to be there when I arrived that day. I was interview by other managers that I would work with. HR was great as far as keeping me update throughout the process. The HR person actually sounded sad over the phone when they gave me the news that I didn't get the job. I see this job posted every few years too...not applying for it in the future that's for sure!
- They asked strengths, weaknesses, your job history, situations when you had to deal with a difficult person, accomplishments (basic personality questions). I got a phone call the next morning saying that one of my weaknesses would hinder me from doing the job (not work related). During the interview, I had said how I am remedying my weakness. From my experience of being interviewed many MANY times, when the hiring manager didn't show up for the LAST stage, I had a hunch it was filled in by an internal candidate. Also, I thought them asking for a survey from your references was too much. Answer Question
