The British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) is a mission-driven services organization committed to delivering peace of mind to our Members and customers across B.C. and the Yukon.

With over 800,000 Members, BCAA serves 1 in 3 B.C. households. The Association received the 2012, 2013, and 2014 J.D. Power and Associates awards for “Highest Customer Satisfaction among Home Insurance Providers in Western Canada,” and is famous for providing roadside assistance and an array of home, auto and travel insurance products and services. BCAA Members can also benefit from CAA Dollar rewards, savings on BCAA insurance products and exclusive offers at Show Your Card & Save locations throughout the province and internationally.

BCAA advocates in the interests of its Members in the areas of road and passenger safety through its Road Safety Foundation.  BCAA also makes efforts to educate its Members and other British Columbians on emerging automotive technologies such as hybrid and electric vehicles.

BCAA has a proud history of serving British Columbians for over 100 years. It currently has 28 service locations, 1 Auto Service Centre, and approximately 1,000 employees and generates over $400 million in annual sales. 

BCAA is affiliated with the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) and the American Automobile Association (AAA), which provide reciprocal services and savings to BCAA Members travelling outside of B.C. and the Yukon.

Our History

  • 1906: The Victoria Automobile Club is founded when a group of motoring enthusiasts gather to enjoy their hobby and help each other when their vehicles break down.
  • 1931: First printing of BCAA’s inaugural, comprehensive B.C. guidebook with detailed maps.
  • 1936: First Emergency Roadside Service that included free towing.
  • 1940: An affiliation of 31 club branches across B.C. officially amalgamates under the name ‘BCAA’ and BCAA’s head office opens in Vancouver.
  • 1946: BCAA’s first personal accident insurance policies go on sale to Members.
  • 1953: BCAA extends emergency roadside service to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In this same year, BCAA affiliates with the brand new Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).
  • 1954: BCAA launches an automobile insurance plan and becomes the largest auto insurance underwriter in B.C. until ICBC is established in 1974.
     
  • 1959: On August 18, BCAA’s first sales centre opens in Nelson and four more locations (New Westminster, Penticton, Prince George and Victoria) open by the end of the year.
  • 1962: BCAA launches the first club-owned emergency roadside service fleet in North America with 10 drivers.
  • 1963: BCAA Membership reaches 100,000.
  • 1972: BCAA Membership reaches 200,000.
  • 1973: BCAA’s first home insurance policy is sold to a Member in Vancouver. This same year, BCAA’s mobile vehicle inspection service (VIS) hits the road in the Metro Vancouver area.
  • 1975: BCAA introduces the Approved Auto Repair Service (AARS) network of garages. AARS soon becomes the prototype for this type of service across North America.
  • 1988: BCAA’s emergency roadside service fleet installs the first digital dispatch system in North America.
  • 1989: BCAA becomes the fastest growing auto club in North America and the first CAA organization to reach 500,000 Members.
  • 1992: In July of this year, BCAA relocates its head office from Vancouver to the current location on Canada Way in Burnaby.
  • 1997: BCAA’s mobile Battery Express service begins operations.
  • 2000: BCAA’s Traffic Safety Foundation (now called the BCAA Road Safety Foundation) is established.
  • 2006: In the spring of this year, BCAA sells its 100,000th home insurance policy.
  • 2009: BCAA becomes the first CAA/AAA club in North America to offer roadside assistance services for cyclists.

    BCAA Members help build stronger B.C. communities. During May, every time we sell a new CAA Plus Membership, BCAA will donate $5 to a local United Way, up to a total donation of $10,000. A BCAA Membership helps support BCAA to run year-round community impact initiatives that include School Safety Patrol and the Community Child Car Seat Program in partnership with United Way of the Lower Mainland.
