Many of the practices here do interesting and challenging work - not just rote, repetitive work. Associates are expected to contribute to business development efforts, and are encouraged to make a real contribution to a professional organization and or the community - they respect your out-of-the-firm efforts. That being said, you are expected to hit your hours; contribute to the firm community; and do something interesting out in the world in a professional organization, bar organization, or charity. They very strongly support pro bono - the wife of the firm chairman is the pro bono director. They also are trying to be more diverse. NOTE: different offices have different cultures.

Promotion to partner from within is very slow. They are reluctant to pay for bar memberships if you are not really active. Justifications for networking conferences - conferences where your clients gather - without proof of business generated is getting harder and harder.
