Current Employee - Mechanical Engineer in Niskayuna, NY

I have been working at Bechtel Marine Propulsion full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Pay is good
Ownership is a key tenant of the work
Interesting and challenging work and projects
    Job security/stability
Easy to jump around into new jobs internally
    Vacation package is very generous
When you leave work, you LEAVE WORK (no email access outside of work)
    Good work/life balance
Rarely have to work more than 40 hours per week
9/80 (every other Friday off) schedule available
    Flexible schedules

    Cons

    Increase in pay is slow
Job progression is far too structured and timed
    Security environment is demoralizing
No cell phone access on site (must be left in car)
Limited (or difficult) access to Internet
Hard to affect any change at any level
Health insurance is continuously going up and it will eventually be high deductible plan only
Most people start their day at 6:30 or 7:00 (very early)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't rely on collateral duties to get everything non-technical done
Look more to the outside world on how to best do things, especially new types of things we don't normally do
Engineers can't do everything, even though we seem to think we can
Fund special initiatives if you what a professional outcome
The move to "One Company" isn't being accepted as much as it should
Directors are already making their organizations into fiefdoms; far too much stove piping from the beginning of "One Company"

Two managers will interview and both need to give a recommendation. Its really a seasonal and random thing depending on the government funding situation. They are very biased to people who are Engineers. They don't care if you took the FE or PE test, just that you are an Engineer.

    Interview Questions
    • "I hate my job"... Its a statement the main manager of the highest paid engineers will just say and then he will wait and see what your response is. He is looking to see if you like a challenge or will get discouraged easily.   View Answers (2)

Wasn't really one. I've heard that there is maybe a 15% pay negotiation but unless they are desperate for you... what your offered is what they will give.
