    Pros

    I've been at BlackLine for over 5 years now. I have always thought the management team was fantastic. The recent growth investment has added many new faces. Of course this was concerning at first, but those concerns were quickly pacified. Even with the additions to the C-suite, the CEO has been able to provide them with a clear vision of who we are, and maintain the family feel that we have always had. There is also a ton of new opportunities. Everyone understands that our greatest resource is our employees and of course our clients, and it really shows.

    Cons

    With any company that is growing as quickly as BlackLine, there will be growing pains. If you are not able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment, I would look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work! As long as we continue down the path we are on, the team will be happy for a very long time to come.

    Application

    I applied online. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at BlackLine Systems (Los Angeles, CA) in March 2015.

    Interview

    I was scheduled for a 2-hour interview with 6 people. My spider-senses started tingling when Kenny, the contracted recruiter told me to make sure to "huddle up" with him prior to the interview. In that huddle he warned me that the process could be a bit rough and that there would be "personalities" involved. Overall, I liked the people who were interviewing me. But some natural stage fright got me off to a rocky start and I'm not certain I ever got both feet on the floor again. I was at the whiteboard for 3 1/2 hours, being told that my solutions weren't as important as my thought process.

    This team really does believe that they are the top gun of the industry and they may be right. But the level of intellectual bullying that they interpret as playful banter is considerable. I think I could have handled it if I weren't under the scrutiny and pressure of 6 people throughout. Three of the six were constantly throwing barbs and challenges while I just tried to make it through the code problems I'd been set at the whiteboard.

    After it was over and I felt like a wrung out sponge, the recruiter proceeded to try to get me to give him a drop-dead number for salary after having already given him my current salary and telling him that I would consider any serious offer.

    The next day, I got a call saying that they had decided I wasn't a fit for the role. I was a bit disappointed but a lot relieved, as anyone who thinks that these methods are acceptable for interviews probably doesn't have a lot of respect for teammates as people.

    However, about a week later, on a Friday, I was contacted by the recruiter again. He said that, although they had not wanted me for the role I'd interviewed for, they had a new role that I was better-suited for and I would be contacted by the hiring manager on Monday to talk about bringing me in. I had mixed feelings because of what I'd already been through but don't like to reject anything out of hand, so I said I'd look forward to talking to the manager.

    Instead, on Monday, the recruiter called me back to tell me that the role didn't really exist, or hadn't been approved, or was part-time, or contract, or... something.

    I have to say that this was one of the most stressful interview processes I've been through in my career. And I have a very decent resume full of companies that you would have heard of. The egos at this place seem to be out of control and there is no empathy for applicants. I could not recommend applying to this company as a dev/engineer to anyone.
