Integrity and Ethics

Environmental Sustainability

Blue Coat is committed to being a good steward of the environment in all aspects of our business. We understand the far-reaching effects of our actions, and recognize our responsibility to conserve resources and minimize waste.

Free Internet Filtering and Parental Control Software: K9 Web Protection

Our commitment to provide products that enable a safe and productive Internet experience extends to the home as well. K9 Web Protection, Blue Coat’s free filtering and parental control software, protects children from accessing inappropriate content including pornography, illegal drug use, and violence/hate/racism.

Blue Coat’s U.S. benefits program provides comprehensive and competitive benefits that support our employees and their families. We offer a wide range of benefits to provide health care coverage, financial protection, savings opportunities and more.

401(k) Retirement Savings Plan

Blue Coat’s 401(k) Savings Plan provides a convenient way for employees to save for retirement. When employees enroll in the 401(k) Plan, they may elect to defer a percentage of their salary—up to an IRS yearly maximum—through pre-tax payroll deductions or Roth after-tax deductions. Blue Coat’s Plan offers a discretionary match and over 15 different investment funds. US Employees are eligible to participate in the plan upon hire if they wish, or automatically after 30 days. Employees age 50 and over are eligible to make additional contributions above the regular IRS annual maximum.

Activities & Events

Blue Coat sponsors activities and events for employees (and sometimes families) throughout the year. These include weekly Architecture Talks, summer picnics, product launch events, holiday parties, as well as opportunities to volunteer. See Blue Coat’s Facebook page for pictures from past events.

Bonus Plan

Blue Coat has established a Bonus Plan for certain eligible employees. Bonuses are based on the company’s overall performance, the individual employee’s bonus target, eligible earnings during the bonus period, and the employee’s performance.

Business Travel Accident Insurance

All employees are automatically covered by business travel accident and travel medical insurance from their date of hire. This program protects the employee and his/her family in the event of an injury or illness sustained while traveling on company business. Employees also receive general travel assistance through the Travel Assist Program.

Casual Atmosphere & Dress

We encourage a casual, yet energetic and exciting environment. Employees wear casual clothes every day. And, depending on the facility, employees can take breaks to play foosball, ping-pong or video games, or just take a walk to a nearby park or outdoor space.

Dental Insurance

Covered Services through Delta Dental PPO Plan are as follows:

  • Diagnostic and preventative benefits (oral exams, cleanings, x-rays) covered at 100% of the Delta dentist fee.
  • Basic benefits (extractions, fillings, root canals) covered at 80% of the Delta dentist fee.
  • Major services (crowns, cast restorations, bridges, dentures, and orthodontia) covered at 50% of the dentist fee.

The plan deductible is $50 per person/$150 per family per calendar year, with a $2,000 maximum yearly benefit.

Disability Benefits

Weekly Short-Term Disability Insurance provides employees with 66.7% of their pay, up to a maximum of $2,500 per week. Coverage begins on the 8th day of disability and ends on the 90th day of disability.

Long Term Disability (LTD) coverage begins on the employee’s 91st day of disability. There are two LTD plans: LTD1 allows the employee to receive 66.7% of his or her pay (taxable benefit); and LTD2 allows the employee to receive 60% of his/her pay (non-taxable benefit), up to a maximum of $10,000 per month for the duration of his/her disability.

Domestic Partner Coverage

Blue Coat provides domestic partner coverage for all medical, dental and vision plans.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Blue Coat provides an employee assistance program for all employees and their dependents. Employees and dependents can receive information on how to cope with a variety of issues including emotional stress, job stress, marital and family problems, alcohol or substance abuse, and legal and financial problems.

Educational Assistance Benefit

We believe that formal education has a positive impact on an employee’s contribution to the company. Blue Coat supports professional development and educational efforts by reimbursing many of the expenses associated with continuing education courses. Blue Coat will reimburse regular full-time employees up to $5,250 tax free per calendar year for costs related to tuition, course and lab fees, books, and supplies specific to the course. (Reimbursement amounts vary by location internationally.)

Flexible Spending Accounts

Blue Coat's Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Program allows employees to pay for certain medical and dependent care expense with pre-tax dollars. By participating and redirecting a portion of their salary to this program, employees can achieve a significant tax savings each year.

Life & Accident Insurance

Blue Coat automatically covers employees under our Life and AD&D Insurance plans. Employees are covered for twice their annual salary—up to a maximum of $500,000. The Life Insurance plan pays benefits to the employee's designated beneficiary(s) in event of the employee’s death. AD&D will pay a partial benefit to the employee if s/he becomes dismembered in a covered accident, or full benefits to their beneficiaries if the employee should die as a direct result of an accident.

Lunch Delivery Service (Sunnyvale)

Four days per week, Blue Coat subsidizes lunch delivery for employees at our Sunnyvale office. Employees place their orders online from a selection of local restaurants. Lunches are delivered to the office, and employees pay their portion of the cost through payroll deduction.

Medical Insurance

Medical Benefits

Employees have a choice of medical plans to meet their unique needs:

  • Cigna Network Plan (Cigna HMO for Texas)

Employees and dependents who choose the Cigna Network/HMO Plan designate a Primary Care Provider in order to receive benefits. Under this plan, there is no annual deductible to meet and an unlimited lifetime maximum benefit. Office visits are covered for a$20 co-pay, and preventive care (including well-woman and well-baby exams) and most in-patient services are covered at 100%.

  • Cigna Open Access Plus (OAP) Plan (All US Locations)

With this plan, in-network office visits are covered for a $20 co-pay ($30 specialist) and most other services received through in-network providers are covered at 90% after the annual deductible is met. Services received through non-network providers are generally covered at 70% after the annual deductible is met. The annual deductible for in-network services is $300 per individual, $600 per family.

  • Kaiser Permanente HMO (For California Residents)

Employees and dependents who choose the Kaiser Permanente HMO Plan must use a Kaiser Permanente HMO Provider in order to receive benefits. Kaiser Permanente requires no annual deductible and most services are either covered at 100% or for a $10 co-pay.

Employees at Blue Coat's Sunnyvale office have access to an on-site fitness room equipped with free weights and cardio machines.

Paid Holidays

Blue Coat observes 10 holidays per year, offers employees one floating holiday of their choice, and closes US offices the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There's a lot of really smart, talented, and dedicated people working at Blue Coat. Most of them are easy to approach and willing to offer help when asked. There's opportunity to grow professionally, bringing one's skills to new levels. Dress is casual, which is a huge plus. You can usually work from home part of the week. Base salary plus bonus brings one's annual pay to far more than you could get anywhere else in the valley. I would dare say it is THE top paying company when it comes to compensating their engineers. The company has an excellent culture, with an in-house, company supplied bar, tech talks, frequent company provided lunches, a free snack and soda supplied break room, several wall mounted TVs scattered around the office, a beautiful view of the valley, opportunities to engage in community projects, company outdoor BBQs 2-3 times in the summer.

    Cons

Since they pay for the best and brightest, there is no hand-holding. The onboarding is basically non-existent; you're just expected to come up to speed quickly and on your own. If you need help, it's up to you ask someone for it. When you come on board, your work environment isn't set up for you; you request the machines you need and set them up yourself. The projects can seem to use a methodology somewhere between Agile and Cowboy coding. You can alternate between too much to do and too little to do (during code freeze and waiting for the OK to release). As a new employee, it can seem like a fraternity, trying to prove yourself worthy of the respect you deserve for your years of experience. In other words, there's a tendency to not trust the new guy until he proves himself, rather than vice versa.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Scrap the ridiculous idea of team building through "Storming and Norming...", which often leads to simply the most vocal and fanatical getting their way. You decide who is best to make the decision on certain things and put them in charge of it. Don't just throw the team together and let them work that out.
