Then: "The Statler Hotel"

In 1925  E.M. Statler, one of our nation's most visionary businessmen and hoteliers, began construction on the The Statler Hotel. Statler purchased a 57,651 square-foot land parcel purchased for $45,000 due to "location, location, location".  The building was planned as a multi-use Hotel and Office Building to ensure a dependable flow of revenue. He envisioned a Hotel that would serve the middle class and the new breed of leisure and business travelers, who recently gained freedom to travel with the popularity of the automobile.

During construction, The Statler Hotel was granted last minute approval to build the 155 ft., 14 story building, which actually exceeded the Massachusetts State Building code of 125 ft. This oversight, caught in the final weeks of construction, was approved by Mayor James Curley, making the Hotel the tallest building in Boston by 30 ft. In addition, the Statler Hotel was the largest independent Hotel in all of New England for 5 decades and 8th largest Hotel in the World.

By the time the project was completed in 1927, craftsmen had used 5 million bricks, 2 acres of window glass, 10 acres of carpet, 7,000 doors, 200 miles of molding, 16 million pounds of steel, and spent over $14 million dollars total. Rooms were priced between $3.50 and $5.00 per night.

Hotel Industry Firsts:

The Hotel was the first to introduce many new and modern conveniences; the most popular being the implementation of Guestroom radios. This was a free feature that was so admired that E.M. Statler soon invested over $1 million dollars to have radios installed in over 7,700 of his Guest Rooms throughout his Hotel empire.

WBZA, a Boston Radio Station, was once broadcasted from the Hotel's Penthouse!

Other new and modern Hotel conveniences perfected at The Statler Hotel included: in-room telephones, occupancy indicators ("Do not Disturb" sign), complimentary newspaper delivery, mail & laundry chutes on each floor and the "Servidoor," a panel in each Guest Room door which allowed the Valet to deliver laundry without disturbing the Guest.

Now: The Boston Park Plaza Hotel

In 1976 it was announced that the Statler Hotel was going to close. "The first instinct was to save the Hotel; it was where my parents were married in 1928. It's always been a Boston landmark," said Irving M. Saunders' son, Donald Saunders. Two weeks later it was bought by the Saunders family, and the name was changed to The Boston Park Plaza Hotel

Today, as Boston's Most Beloved, we are proud of our storied history and heritage as we look to the future of this iconic property.

Taking the Pulse of the Workforce

Annually, Highgate offers a confidential, online associate survey that helps us measure key elements of employee satisfaction and engagement so we can target areas for improvement in our work environment.

Welcoming New Associates from Acquisitions

Acquisitions play an important role in Highgate's strategy for long-term growth, and they are critical in developing Highgate's portfolio of successful Hotels. We take care to welcome the associates of our acquisitions into the Highgate family, where they can benefit from expanded personal development and career opportunities. In fact, some of our senior leaders originally joined Highgate from acquired companies.

Associates of a company that is being acquired can feel overwhelmed by the experience. Highgate uses an innovative human resources model to introduce newly acquired associates to the company culture and make them feel at home. Communication is a vital component of this on-boarding process. As soon as an acquisition is announced, a Highgate Team is dispatched to the acquired site. The team meets with associates to walk through the integration process and timeline, making sure they know what to expect in the upcoming weeks and resolving any urgent professional or personal concerns.

Engaging the managers of the acquired company is also a key part of the process. In doing so, Highgate tries to involve these managers in the process of on-boarding the rest of the acquired associates. We work with the management team to integrate the new associates into our compensation structure.

When most acquisitions close, we hold an onsite orientation meeting to ensure a smooth integration process for the new associates. This helps them become productive quickly, and assures them that a support structure is there when they need it. The New Associate Orientation includes information on a range of areas, including Highgate benefits, policies, and workplace resources.

We are proud of our beautiful city, in sunshine or snow.

If you're considering a career move, here are a few more reasons to consider Boston and the Boston Park Plaza.

Welcome to Boston!

The City of Boston hosts over 12 million annual visitors from across the country and around the globe. This vibrant, thriving city is renowned for its cultural facilities, world-class educational institutions, champion sports franchises, as well as its place at the very forefront of American history. Tourism is one of New England's largest industries; as the region's social and commercial "hub", Boston is willing to accommodate and entertain you as few other cities can.

History. Heritage. National Importance.

Boston is the birthplace of the American idea of democracy. The Boston town meeting, where each citizen has a voice, set the stage for the American Revolution. In the early days of American history, the people living in the small towns of New England had more power of self-government than anyone else in the British empire.

Getting Around

Chances are you’ve heard Boston referred to as “the walking city.”  The City of Boston works hard to live up to this title. Our Public Works and Transportation Departments are constantly marking crosswalks, performing regular maintenance of traffic signals and pedestrian pushbuttons, and using innovative pedestrian safety signs at busy locations such as downtown Boston. Schools, parks, playgrounds, elderly complexes, and public libraries are also a top priority for these new safety improvements.

Boson also offers subway, busses, commuter rail, Amtrak, and ferry options.

Thousands of residents and visitors use the extensive MBTA system of trains and buses to get in and around Boston. Over 300,000 people commute into Boston daily for work. Public transportation via bus, subway, and commuter train serves as a vital link between Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods and the greater Metro-Boston area.

I have been working at Boston Park Plaza Hotel full-time (More than a year)

This hotel is a great place to work for. Coming on board a while ago, before our new owners, I feel as though I had the "privilege" of seeing the hotel in rough shape. Once new management and almost an entirely new EC took over, I've personally seen nothing but positive changes including growth for me. Between being able to watch this hotel transform before my eyes and the promotions happening for truly deserving employees, I would recommend this hotel to every qualified person I know.

The construction, although incredibly exciting, has truly taken a toll on some of the staff as well as long time guests. I think I speak for the majority of current employees when I say we all are looking forward to the final product to hurry up and get here!

    Advice to Management

My only advice to management would be to consider more cross training among non-union employees. A lot of staff/managers are all eager and ready to grow. Learning the ins and outs could greatly benefit not just the employee, but the hotel as well.

I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Boston Park Plaza Hotel.

I am torn because the team was nice enough but the interview process was handled so badly by the hr director. I had to meet with her several times and she was always late. Plus she would ask questions but didn't listen to my answers just talk right over me with story's about herself. It didn't help that the office is dirty and musty smelling and in the grossest part of the basement (yes the basement) I dreaded going there even about a job I thought I really wanted bc I worried about my health. How there are people who work in those conditions everyday? It can't be safe but irregardless I would think such a changing property would get them at lease a better looking place to work and meet for interviews. Maybe the GM needs to look at what's going on down there.
