Boyd Gaming – Why Work For Us?

undefined

Boyd Gaming Corporation made great strides as a Company in 2013.

Throughout the year, we successfully executed on a thoughtful, multifaceted strategic plan aimed at enhancing long-term shareholder value. As a result, we significantly strengthened our financial position while continuing to build a business capable of generating sustainable growth.

We refined our core business. Our success depends on providing a marketleading experience to our customers, and that begins with continually refining our product, our marketing and amenities. Penny Lane is a highly successful example — an attractive new gaming destination that drove meaningful increases in play at Boyd Gaming properties across the country. Those efforts will continue in 2014, with a particular focus on refreshing our non-gaming amenitiesin a cost-effective way.

We strengthened our balance sheet. We paid down more than half a billion dollars in debt, eliminating more than $60 million a year in interest expense alone And we are generating nearly $100 million a year in free cash flow from Peninsula in our first full year of ownership. We are a stronger and more flexible company, able to pursue a wider range of growth opportunities.

We are expanding our business. We successfully integrated the five Peninsula properties into our Company, on the heels of our successful acquisition of the IP. We continued to make progress on our new development opportunities in northern California and south Florida. And we are actively exploring other growth opportunities as well, both across the United States and throughout the world. We are establishing ourselves as a leading player in

In late November, Boyd Gaming launched an online gaming product in the state of New Jersey, quickly garnering a significant share of America’s largest online gaming market. We have made great progress so far, and we are well-positioned to capitalize on future growth in online gaming across the country.

We are greatly encouraged by the progress we made in 2013. We are taking the right steps to drive efficiencies, grow EBITDA and margins, and maximize long-term shareholder value. We continue to successfully evolve and adapt as a Company, finding new ways to deliver a product that meets the changing wants of our valued customers, both established and new.

But one thing that will never change is our dedication to offering an exceptional entertainment product and memorable customer service, delivered by outstanding team members. That has always been the foundation of our success, and it will remain the defining philosophy of our Company going forward.

At Boyd Gaming Corporation, we’re proud to be one of the leading companies in our industry. But we’ve never forgotten our roots, and retain a family-owned culture to this day. Our Company’s story is unique and inspiring: one man parlayed an unflagging sense of optimism, a winning attitude with people, and a legendary work ethic into a gaming and entertainment empire.

The Boyd Gaming story dates back to 1941, when Sam Boyd arrived in Las Vegas with his family and just $80 in his pocket. He worked up through the ranks of the Las Vegas gaming industry, moving from dealer to pit boss to shift boss. It wasn’t long before Sam had saved up enough money to buy a small interest in the world-renowned Sahara Hotel. He then moved on to become general manager and partner at The Mint in downtown Las Vegas, where he introduced a number of successful marketing, gaming and entertainment innovations.

After the Mint was sold in 1968, Sam Boyd started managing the Eldorado Casino in downtown Henderson. He had acquired it with his son, Bill Boyd, in 1962. Bill, a practicing attorney, earned his first interest in the Eldorado by doing all of its legal work.

The birth of Boyd Gaming came on January 1, 1975, when Sam and Bill Boyd founded the Company to develop and operate the California Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas. At this time, Bill left the legal profession, after practicing for 15 years, and began working full-time at the California. Seeking a niche for their new property, the Boyds decided to market the property to the underserved tourists of Hawaii – and one of downtown’s greatest success stories was born.

Their next venture came several years later, when the Boyds selected a quiet 13-acre desert parcel on Boulder Highway – halfway between the California and the Eldorado – as the site of their next casino. They’d call it “Sam’s Town,” after the father of Boyd Gaming. Its 1979 opening led to the creation of what’s known today as the “Boulder Strip” – and it was the first full-scale resort to cater to Las Vegas locals. Although many were skeptical a casino could succeed at the then-isolated location, the Boyds’ gamble paid off handsomely. Sam’s Town quickly grew into one of the most popular casinos in the Las Vegas Valley.

Although famous as a leading businessman and innovator, Sam Boyd was well-known for giving back to his community as well. He helped introduce both the United Way and the Boys and Girls Clubs to Las Vegas in the 1960s. He was an early proponent of diversity in the gaming industry as well, becoming one of the first casino operators to hire women and African-Americans as dealers.

Sam Boyd passed away in 1993, but the company he founded continued to grow and thrive under Bill’s leadership. Through a series of new developments and strategic acquisitions – including our recent acquisitions of the IP Casino Resort Spa and Peninsula Gaming -- Boyd Gaming grew into a nationwide company, operating 22 casino entertainment properties in Nevada, New Jersey, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Although we’ve grown into a nationwide company, we’ve never forgotten Sam Boyd’s legacy of integrity, service and excellence. Sam Boyd founded a business based on a belief in treating people right, and his spirit lives on in the company that bears his name.

Choice of Health Care Plans ad Dental/Vision Coverage

At Boyd Gaming we respect the differences among individuals. This extends to our belief that there is no one-size-fits-all health care plan. This has led the Company to offer all team members a choice among three different health care plans so that they can get the medical coverage that best fits their needs.

All three health plan options include pharmacy coverage, including low costs for generic prescription drugs and a mail-order program for maintenance medications.

Dental Coverage / Vision Coverage

  • No charge for preventative dental care
  • Limited deductibles and co-insurance for more dental services
  • Vision coverage provides both routine vision and primary eye care
  • Low costs for exams, glasses, frames, and contact lenses

Company-Paid Life Insurance

All team members covered by one of the Company health care plans are also covered by our Company-paid life insurance policy. Any dependents who are covered by one of our health care plans also receive Company-paid life insurance.

Voluntary Benefits
We also offer optional benefits that team members can choose to enroll in for extra insurance coverage. These options include:

Voluntary Life Insurance
In addition to the Company-paid life insurance that comes with our health plans you can also elect to receive additional coverage for you and your dependents.

Voluntary Short Term & Long Term Disability Insurance
We also offer our team members the opportunity to purchase disability insurance for short or long term disabilities.

Critical Illness Insurance
This benefit pays a lump sum cash amount upon the diagnosis of a critical illness. Also available to dependents.

Accident Insurance
This benefit pays a lump sum cash amount for specified accidents and accidental death. Also available to dependents.

Universal Life Insurance
Provides life insurance and also builds cash value over time. Also available to dependents.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA's)
Team members eligible for enrollment in one of our health care plans can choose to contribute pre-tax dollars to a flexible spending account that can be used to pay for eligible out-of-pocket health expenses - and also to a flexible spending account for eligible dependent daycare expenses.

Diversity in Our Workforce

Recruiting, hiring and maintaining a diverse workforce is a key component of our diversity initiatives at Boyd Gaming. A variety of outlets are utilized • in all of our markets • to recruit and establish the most effective and diverse talent pool possible. Career fairs, ethnic newspapers, non-profit organizations, job recruitment web sites, and minority colleges and universities are just a handful of the primary tools used in our recruitment efforts.

We believe that each individual's uniqueness strengthens all of us as a whole. We manage by inclusion by having team members closely tied to the way we do business. We believe in and encourage the input, views, and ideas of all team members. We do this by asking for your participation in many areas, including focus groups, roundtables with senior management, and yearly opinion surveys.

These are just some of the benefits available to Boyd Gaming team members. Apply today to find out more!

I have been working at Boyd Gaming full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Positive work environment. Friendly employees & customers. Customer oriented focus. Some top management actually cared and listened to the employees. They promote from within. Decent benefits. Free food. Great work schedule.

    Cons

The pay was not the best. Small bonuses. The chain of command was a bit disorganized, and there was a lack of communication between departments. I don't think they reached out to understand their customers very well. The gaming Industry lacks avenues for growth, and the market is becoming saturated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the customers. Don't just ignore what they have to say, because it conflicts with revenue. Bridges were being burnt with customers all the time, sooner or later, if things don't change or more new customers are not created, there will be no solid ground for the company to stand on.

I applied online. The process took 5 days - interviewed at Boyd Gaming in August 2014.

    Interview Details

I had my FIT interview yesterday (08/13/2014). I liked the "icebreaker" exercise the group did, standing in order according to our birth dates without speaking to each other. I also like the 4 questions asked during the interview and that the interview process was done in a timely manner. I think that Debbie Yancey has a good and personable ways how she interviews.

Holding group interviews is a nice process because it allows others to hear if there is similarity in ideas and experiences.
