What's a college student's biggest expense besides beer? The average college student spends an estimated $1,200 each year on textbooks and school supplies. [...] thrifty students have found ways to avoid paying for books: by renting, scanning or downloading them illegally, leaving the companies that manufacture the books with dwindling profits.

I have been working at Cengage Learning full-time (more than 5 years)

The company has recently moved to a gorgeous building, investing in amazing furniture and office space. There are white board and chalkboard walls, collaborative space and fun colors. There is finally a Leader in place that believes in communication and transparency. The expectations are getting higher but the work is becoming rewarding. Overall a positive place to work where we are all being challenged to understand the business and that is a good thing.

The leadership team is often detached from the employees. Some of them are remote so at times that is a challenge - but at least they care and seem to be decent business minded individuals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to be clear in your focus. Keep communicating. Don't get distracted with shiny objects. Stay the course so we can thrive. Overall, super happy about the transformation going on. Way to go.

    Software Developer Interview

    Anonymous Employee in Boston, MA
    Application Details

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 daysinterviewed at Cengage Learning in February 2015.

    Interview Details

Contacted via LinkedIn by in-house recruiter. Answered a bunch of questions via email. Eventually spoke with hiring manager.

The interview was good, primarily about culture fit, technology stack, and playing with new technologies.

Where the interview derailed was when I started interviewing them. Remember to ALWAYS interview THEM too! I asked about some things the new CEO had said about restructuring the company after it emerged from bankruptcy in April 2014; statements about laying off close to half the workforce by the end of fiscal year 2016, and reducing expenses, etc. The hiring manager didn't much like that I had done my homework and had asked hard questions. I wasn't looking for them to tell me everything was okay - and I mentioned that - I was looking for some guidance on how this would be a place I could expect to grow for a bit of time and not be looking for new work in the next year.

I never heard back afterwards. Not even to tell me that they had passed or why. To spell out that I'm not a whiney candidate that didn't get a job, I'm happily and gainfully employed and was simply looking at Cengage as an exciting disrupting entity in the eLearning field that I was interested in working with.
