I have been working at DW part-time for more than 5 years

If you are a self-starter wanting to learn a lot about TV in a very intense fashion this is a pretty good place to be. Best to keep your expectations low so that you won't be disappointed, though. Interesting people with interesting backgrounds, quite a driven work atmosphere. A company that seems to be perpetually changing and unsure of where it is going in the future... but with some very good people to guide it along the way.

As in any media company shift work dominates with flexibility being a very important factor for any and all involved. That can be a big advantage because you can plan other things around your DW life, but it can also be a very stressful experience because of the lack of predictiability.

The challenging and interesting jobs are assigned with a great deal of politics... and training and feedback opportunities are fairly infrequent (but getting better). While DW is changing its approach to its employees - the overwhelming majority in TV news are freelancers - and no longer treating them as expendable, that change is coming only slowly. The culture of negativity and cynicism among many colleagues is quite prevalent... but given the many attempts at reforms in the last decade that have not worked out that is somewhat understandable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps consider trying to do a bit less and produce a better program in the long run... rather than always more with less. Communication leaves a lot to be desired though recent efforts bode well for the future. Offer regular feedback sessions that move beyond the day to day operations, and yearly evaluations of individual performance. Less of the boys club atmosphere would also be good.... with more women taking on leadership positions.
